Relative Humidity Primer #3

If you’ve been following our series of posts about Relative Humidity (RH) ion the home, you’re now many steps ahead of most people in understanding why it’s so important to understand, and importantly, why you need to control it.

So over the next 2 – 3 posts, we’re providing tips for homeowners for doing just that – controlling RH and not allowing it to get control of you.

What are effective steps to take in controlling RH?

Exhaust Air Management

  • Make sure your humidistat is in working order, correctly set (40% RH), & connected to your primary bath fan
  • If you do not have a humidistat, get one installed
  • When using cooking facilities, run exhaust fan from start-up of cooking time & for 30 minutes after cooking (and any related cleanup is completed)
  • When using bathroom facilities, run exhaust fan from start-up of facility use time & for 30 minutes after use is completed
  • If following these guidelines does not result in satisfactory control of Unit RH, or if existing fan(s) are too noisy consider replacing existing fans with low noise / high volume exhaust fans
  • Commonly referred to as “whisper fans”, these units will provide between 80 and 140 cubic feet per minute of air flow – versus 25 to 45 cubic feet per minute supplied by most original fans in older units – with significant reduction in noise
  • Select replacement whisper fans carefully as to size of required fan box opening and adaptability to fixed exhaust pipes in your unit. Many older units are equipped with 3” diameter fixed exhaust pipes, while current boxes usually run 4” diameter connectors. Reduction fittings are available
  • Panasonic corporation makes a product branded “whisper fit” designed to fit inside most traditional exhaust fan boxes. Selecting this type of unit could represent a significant saving in time and money for your upgrade
  • Always engage a qualified & insured contractor where permitted work or attachment to Strata Systems is required.

Next time we’ll discuss Fresh Air Supply Management; In unit air movement; and RH source management.
